The Ministry of Commerce of China has announced a ban on the export of dual-use products to 20 Japanese entities, including divisions of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, on the grounds that they would supply the Japanese military.
This measure is part of an escalation of tensions between Beijing and Tokyo, especially after the controversial comments of Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi about Taiwan. The new rules affect Japanese companies' access to rare earths essential for the automotive, aerospace, and electronics industries.
The Japanese government has condemned the measures as unacceptable and has called for their withdrawal, considering them an attempt to limit Japan's militarization. In this context, Japan is reviewing its defense strategy and is proposing to double military spending.
