Researchers at King’s College London have discovered that chewing sugar-free gum after consuming nitrate-rich vegetables, such as beetroot, can temporarily amplify the beneficial effects on blood pressure. The nitrates from vegetables are converted into nitrites by bacteria in the oral cavity, and subsequently into nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels.

The study involved healthy volunteers who consumed beetroot juice and chewed either sugar-free gum or regular gum. The results showed a decrease in saliva pH and an increase in nitrites, which led to a reduction in blood pressure. Although the effects were temporary, the researchers suggest that a sweet dessert after a meal rich in nitrates could enhance these benefits. However, frequent consumption of sugar is not recommended due to its negative impact on dental health. The study highlights the importance of bacteria in the oral cavity in processing nitrates and paves the way for future research in the field of sports medicine.
