The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Tuesday that Germany, the largest economy in Europe, has the capacity to reform and undergo a fundamental transformation by 2035.

At an economic event in Berlin, Merz emphasized that public administration will be digitized, and energy will become accessible and reliable. However, he acknowledged that the mood in Germany is tense, with job losses and bankruptcies. Despite these challenges, Merz warned against excessive pessimism.

Recent polls show that 55% of Germans expect the current governing coalition to collapse before the 2029 elections, and the government's approval rating has dropped to 11%. Only 10% of respondents believe that the government has performed well, while 69% rate it as poor. These figures reflect the increased pressure on Chancellor Merz, in the context of the rising popularity of the Alternative for Germany (AfD).
