Catherine Connolly, a politician supported by the left opposition, is on her way to becoming the President of Ireland, after her opponent, Heather Humphreys, acknowledged defeat. The vote counting is ongoing, but an 'unprecedented' number of spoiled ballots have been recorded as a sign of protest. Connolly, born in Galway in 1957, was a member of the Labour Party until 2006 and is now running as an independent. She describes herself as a socialist and pacifist, promoting Ireland's neutrality and criticizing NATO and the EU. She also advocates for the legalization of LGBTQIA+ marriages, the legalization of abortion, and the reunification of Ireland with Northern Ireland. Connolly has been a lawyer and psychologist and is known for her critical positions towards Israel and her support for Palestine.
