The state of California has declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles and in other communities in the south due to torrential rains that could cause dangerous flooding around Christmas. A massive rain corridor, known as an "atmospheric river," will bring heavy rains, snow, and strong winds. The National Weather Service has warned that flash floods are expected on a large scale, putting lives and property at risk.
The southern region has been placed under maximum alert, and Governor Gavin Newsom has announced evacuations in the most affected areas. On Wednesday, streets in Los Angeles were blocked by fallen trees, and thousands of homes were left without power. Authorities have set up shelters for those evacuated, and traffic has been restricted in the affected areas. The storm will also bring snowfall in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and gusts of wind over 80 km/h, increasing the risk of landslides in neighborhoods affected by previous fires.
