The French agency for food safety reported that more than half of the adult population exceeds the reference toxicological values for cadmium, a toxic metal associated with the increase in cases of pancreatic cancer. Cadmium, present in soil and contaminating the body through food, particularly affects children and women, being found in cereals, baked goods, and potatoes.
A two-year study shows that nearly half of adults have an exposure level that is too high. Cadmium accumulates in the body, causing negative health effects, including impaired kidney function, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular risks.
The agency has called for urgent actions to reduce the population's exposure, especially by limiting soil contamination. It is also recommended to diversify the diet and avoid tobacco consumption to reduce individual exposure.
