Bulgaria is preparing to adopt the euro and EU finance ministers will on Tuesday give the green light for the process, due to start in 2026. Although the European Commission and the European Central Bank have confirmed that Bulgaria meets the necessary conditions, many citizens oppose the changeover, fearing possible price rises. There have been "no euro" protests in Sofia and polls show almost half of Bulgarians are against adopting the single currency. But euro supporters believe that joining will strengthen Bulgaria's geopolitical ties with the West.
