Australia and Japan have signed contracts for a military agreement worth approximately 10 billion Australian dollars (7 billion US dollars) for the delivery of warships to the Royal Australian Navy.

Defense Ministers, Richard Marles and Shinjiro Koizumi, signed a memorandum that underscores the commitment of both governments to successfully implement the ship delivery program. The agreement, initially reached in August, represents a significant step in Japan's security strategy, which seeks to strengthen military partnerships in the context of China's growing influence.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will build three Mogami-class frigates in Japan, starting in 2029, and another eight frigates will be manufactured later in Australia. These ships are intended for multiple missions, including submarine hunting and air defense, with the role of protecting Australia's strategic maritime routes.
