The teenager who opened fire on Wednesday in a school in southern Turkey, killing nine people, paid tribute to the author of a misogynistic attack in the United States, police announced on Thursday, according to AFP, Agerpres reports.

The death toll from Wednesday's attack, when a 14-year-old teenager opened fire in a school in Kahramanmaraş province, Turkey, has reached nine people, after initially four deaths were confirmed.

The police announced that the attacker used an image on his WhatsApp profile referencing Elliot Rodger, the perpetrator of a misogynistic attack in 2014 in the United States.

The attacker's father, a former police inspector, has been detained and placed in custody.

The provincial governor confirmed that the teenager has died, without specifying whether it was a suicide or an act of violence.

The attacker entered the school with weapons, likely belonging to his father, and opened fire in two classrooms. The police confiscated the attacker's digital devices for analysis, determining that the incident has no links to terrorism and appears to be an isolated case. Such incidents are rare in Turkey, where many firearms circulate, most of them illegally.
