An ancient Roman wreck of approximately 2,100 years old has been discovered near the locality of Mazara del Vallo, Sicily, at a depth of 46 meters. The ship, measuring 21 meters in length and 6 meters in width, carries about 500 amphorae, ceramic vessels used for transporting wine.

The discovery was made by the Carabinieri, with the help of divers, after fishermen alerted the authorities. The Italian Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, stated that this is one of the most important recent underwater archaeological discoveries.

Divers described the excitement of being among the first to see the wreck after two millennia. Most of the amphorae are of the Dressel 1A type, essential for studying trade networks from ancient times.

The authorities will begin research to establish the date of sinking, the origin, and the condition of the cargo, thus protecting this site of exceptional archaeological importance. This discovery joins other significant Roman wrecks identified in the waters of Italy in recent years.
