Amsterdam has banned, starting May 1, advertisements for burgers, gasoline cars, and airlines on billboards, tram stops, and subway stations, becoming the first capital in the world to give up street advertising for meat products and fossil fuels.

This decision marks a change in the environmental policies of local authorities, aiming to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and reduce meat consumption by half. Advertisements for products such as burgers, gasoline cars, and low-cost flights have been replaced with the promotion of cultural events. Authorities argue that the measure is essential to avoid contradictions between climate policies and advertising that promotes harmful behaviors. Although supporters believe this will reduce the influence of companies on consumers, the meat industry and the tourism sector contest the measure, considering it a restriction of commercial freedom. Other cities in the Netherlands or abroad have adopted similar measures, and experts suggest that eliminating these advertisements could change social norms in the long term.
