Amazon is in advanced discussions to acquire the satellite telecommunications group Globalstar, a move that could strengthen the e-commerce giant's efforts to develop its own satellite network in low Earth orbit, in direct competition with Starlink, SpaceX's orbital internet service founded by Elon Musk. The negotiations are complicated by Apple's 20% stake in Globalstar, which requires discussions between Amazon and Apple. Globalstar's shares have significantly increased in recent months, reaching a market capitalization of approximately $9 billion amid takeover speculation.
Amazon has already launched satellites for its constellation, named Leo, but is facing a delay in implementation compared to SpaceX, which has over 10,000 active satellites. Additionally, Amazon has signed agreements with JetBlue and Delta for in-flight internet services, scheduled to begin in 2027 and 2028. Globalstar reported a 9% revenue increase in 2024, and its acquisition could accelerate the development of Amazon's satellite network.
