The President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, announced on Tuesday that all 24 students kidnapped on November 17 from the school in the town of Maga, Kebbi state, have been rescued. One student managed to escape on the day of the abduction. Tinubu emphasized the need to intensify security measures in vulnerable areas to prevent further kidnapping incidents.
The attack in Kebbi is part of a series of recent mass kidnappings, including an attack on a Catholic school in Niger state, where over 300 students and staff were abducted. Authorities also reported the release of 38 kidnapped worshippers during an attack on a church in Kwara state.
Although there is no group claiming responsibility for these kidnappings, it is estimated that criminal gangs frequently target schools and isolated communities for ransom. These kidnappings have become a feature of insecurity in Nigeria, where over 1,500 students have been abducted since the infamous Chibok girls incident. The kidnappings affect both Christians and Muslims, and ransom demands are common in the affected regions.
