The chikungunya virus has led to more than 7,000 cases being reported in China, particularly in Foshan. Authorities have implemented strict measures, including disinfection and penalties for stagnant water, in the face of heavy rains and high temperatures. The virus causes fever, joint pain and can lead to long-term disability. Although not transmitted from person to person, symptoms can persist for years. The US has issued a travel warning for Guangdong province.
