More than 2,000 journalists from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) went on strike on Wednesday, demanding guarantees against the impact of artificial intelligence on jobs and better wages. This 24-hour strike is an unprecedented event in the last two decades, causing ABC to replace live programs with recorded broadcasts. The Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) union emphasized that employees do not want to strike, but to fulfill their duties, demanding fair pay and protections for editorial integrity. The salary proposal rejected in March was deemed insufficient to compensate for inflation, and the decline in advertising revenue and the rise of social media have led to layoffs in the Australian media.
