A truck was hit on Thursday, September 3, by a PKP Intercity train after becoming trapped between the barriers at a railway crossing near Gdańsk Lipce station in Poland. The incident occurred at around 1:25 p.m. local time and was captured by surveillance cameras.
The truck entered the railway crossing, and the barriers came down as the train approached. One of the barriers blocked the vehicle, and the driver tried to reverse out of the danger zone. However, he hesitated and lost valuable seconds, despite warnings from other drivers at the crossing.
The train hit the truck’s trailer head-on, destroying it. The truck driver and the train passengers were not injured, but the train driver was taken to hospital for medical care.
Local authorities said the damage could have been avoided if the vehicle had not entered the crossing while the barriers were coming down. Any vehicle trapped between the barriers must leave the area immediately, including by breaking through them if necessary.
