A 47-year-old Romanian man is in very serious condition at Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania after being hit by a train in Vittoria, Italy. The incident occurred on the railway line between Caltanissetta and Modica, and investigators are trying to establish exactly how the man ended up on the tracks.
The locomotive driver spotted him near the railway and immediately applied the emergency brakes, but the short distance did not allow the train to stop completely before the impact. The victim remained trapped under the locomotive and was freed after several minutes of intervention by rescue crews.
The man was stabilized at the scene and initially transported to Guzzardi Hospital. Later, due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to the medical facility in Catania. According to Corriere di Ragusa, he suffered complex facial trauma, multiple facial fractures and a brain hemorrhage.
Investigators are checking whether the man fell asleep on the tracks after consuming alcohol or whether it was an attempted suicide. The accident caused delays and disruptions to rail traffic in the area.
