An employee of the Nuclear Regulation Authority of Japan lost a work phone, likely at Shanghai airport, on November 3. The device contained a confidential list with the names and contact details of personnel from the nuclear security division, sensitive information that is not publicly accessible. The incident was reported to a Japanese data protection agency, and officials stated that the phone was not used to access nuclear data.

The loss of the phone occurs in a context of tensions between Japan and China, especially following comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding a possible military response in the event of an attack on Taiwan. Additionally, the Nuclear Regulation Authority is reviewing Tokyo Electric Power's (TEPCO) request to restart the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, in the context of Japan's return to nuclear energy after the Fukushima accident in 2011.
