On Wednesday, at 9:00 local time, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 occurred in eastern Turkey, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) and the Presidency for Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD). The epicenter of the earthquake was located 19 kilometers north of Sincik, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The seismic movement was felt most intensely in Malatya province, an area known for its seismic sensitivity. Although no immediate damage was reported, images broadcasted by television showed evacuations from schools and buildings. Turkey, situated on active tectonic faults, was severely affected by a devastating earthquake in 2023, which led to the death of over 53,000 people and the destruction of hundreds of thousands of buildings. This new seismic movement raises additional concerns among the affected population.
