On Thursday, at 14:06, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale struck the island of Karpathos, located in the southeast of the Aegean Sea, at a depth of 13 kilometers and just 4 kilometers from the southeast coast of the island.

The earthquake was also felt in Rhodes, causing concern among the residents. Greece is located at the intersection of the African and Eurasian plates, being one of the most seismically active areas in Europe, with approximately half of the continent's seismic energy coming from this region. Seismic activity has been intensively monitored, and in 2025, the area around the island of Santorini experienced an unprecedented seismic swarm, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency.

Additionally, in 2026, Greece continued to record low to moderate intensity earthquakes, constantly monitored by seismological institutes, considering the high seismic risks in the Mediterranean basin.
