Dean Roy, a 15-year-old teenager from Vermont, has announced his intention to run for governor of the state, taking advantage of a legislative loophole that does not set a minimum age for candidates. If his bid is accepted, Roy would become the youngest person to seek major political office in the United States.

The teenager said he discovered the absence of an age limit when he checked Vermont’s election laws. Article 23 sets out just one relevant condition: the candidate must have lived in the state for the four years preceding the election. Roy says he meets this requirement.

His proposals include banning mass surveillance, building nuclear power plants and expanding access to housing. He wants to repeal Act 250, limit Airbnb rentals and raise taxes on short-term rentals.

Roy also criticizes the concentration of wealth in the hands of billionaires. He proposes that no person in Vermont be allowed to have a net worth exceeding one billion dollars, with any amount above that threshold directed to the government.

The teenager acknowledges that he does not necessarily expect to win, but says he wants to launch a movement and encourage more young people to get involved in politics.
