The decision comes against the backdrop of a new international emergency triggered by a surge in smallpox cases in Africa, largely driven by the new lb strain, which is increasingly prevalent in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Japan plans to provide 3.05 million doses of vaccine to support the DRC.
