A study conducted by specialists from Australia analyzed medical data from the last two decades, highlighting the effects of increased carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration on the human body. Although the changes observed in blood parameters, such as bicarbonate levels, remain within normal limits, the trends suggest that increased exposure to CO2 could affect the chemical balance of blood in the future. The study showed an approximately 7% increase in bicarbonate levels in blood, correlated with the increase in CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, which has risen from 369 ppm in 2000 to 420 ppm currently. Researchers warn that if current trends continue, certain values in blood tests could reach the upper or lower limits of normal ranges by 2076. These changes are particularly relevant for children and adolescents, who will have greater exposure to these conditions.
The authors of the study emphasize the importance of continuous monitoring of atmospheric composition and public health, suggesting that the increase in CO2 is not only an environmental issue but also a potential long-term threat to human health. Reducing CO2 emissions thus becomes essential not only for combating climate change but also for protecting the health of the population.
