According to Eurostat data, Romania is facing an alarming consumption of fruits and vegetables, having one of the lowest levels in the European Union. Almost 75% of Romanians do not consume even one serving daily, and only 2.4% meet the WHO recommendation of 5 servings per day. Although Romania has 8.1% of the EU's agricultural land, its contribution to vegetable production is only 1.9% and 5.4% for fruits, which increases dependence on imports and keeps prices high.

Compared to other countries in Central and Eastern Europe, Romania remains behind, and the low consumption has a negative impact on public health. To improve the situation, coordinated interventions between the state and farmers, information strategies, and coherent public policies are needed to support the production and consumption of fruits and vegetables, especially for vulnerable households.
