The Minister of Health discussed a project for integrating medical graduates into the healthcare system, considering that only 35-40% of them manage to access residency. He proposed the creation of a professional master's program that would allow these graduates to obtain the title of general practitioner after going through a 2-3 year internship in various specialties. These general practitioners could have specific competencies, such as in emergency medicine or laboratory work, but they will not become specialists without completing residency.
The project is inspired by practices from other European countries and aims to address the needs of the healthcare system in Romania, where there is a shortage of medical staff. In 2025, out of the 5,374 positions available for residency, 38 remained unfilled, highlighting the necessity of this initiative.
