Research shows that men who carry the H63D genetic variant, associated with hereditary hemochromatosis, have twice the risk of dementia as women. The study, based on data from ASPREE research, suggests that testing for this variant could be beneficial in medical screening for men. Although the HFE gene controls iron levels, a direct link between iron in the blood and dementia has not been found, suggesting other mechanisms are involved. This finding could lead to personalized preventive interventions.
