The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) has confirmed the first death caused by influenza in the 2025 season, an 88-year-old woman from Cluj, who had pre-existing conditions and was not vaccinated. In the week of December 15-21, 11,174 cases of influenza were reported, almost double compared to the previous week, with the most cases in Bucharest and the counties of Cluj, Botoșani, Bihor, Iași, and Neamț. INSP declared an epidemiological alert, considering the intensity of influenza activity and the spread of influenza viruses.
Additionally, 102,655 respiratory infections were reported, showing a significant increase compared to previous weeks. By December 21, 1,252,642 flu vaccinations had been recorded, but the number of vaccinations remains insufficient in light of the rising cases of influenza.
