A team of doctors from Northwestern University performed an innovative intervention, keeping a critically ill patient alive for 48 hours without lungs, using an artificial system that completely took over respiratory function. The patient, a 33-year-old man, was suffering from severe respiratory failure due to a lung infection that did not respond to treatment. The artificial system oxygenated the blood and stabilized blood flow, subsequently allowing for a successful double lung transplant.

After two years, the patient has recovered well, and the transplanted lungs are functioning normally. This intervention suggests that, in selected cases, lung transplantation can be successfully performed even under extreme conditions, opening new perspectives in treatments for acute respiratory failure.
