Teplizumab, a drug already approved in the US, is being tested in the UK to slow the progression of type 1 diabetes by training the immune system to protect pancreatic cells. Hannah Robinson, the first British adult to receive the treatment, hopes it will delay the need for insulin. Experts believe the treatment represents a major change in diabetes management, with the potential to alter the immune process and help high-risk people avoid insulin therapy.
