A therapy that combines three drugs blocks the KRAS gene, responsible for pancreatic cancer, showing promising results in mice.

A recent study has shown that a therapy combining three drugs can eliminate pancreatic cancer and prevent its recurrence, targeting the KRAS gene, which is involved in most cases of pancreatic cancer.

Researcher Mariano Barbacid from CNIO explained that attacking KRAS on three fronts prevents the development of resistance in tumor cells to treatment. The results, published in the journal PNAS, show that the treatment had no significant toxic effects on mice. Although the progress is promising, Barbacid warns that the therapy is not yet ready for testing in humans. The startup Vega Oncotargets was created to develop suitable drugs for human use. Pancreatic cancer is extremely deadly, with over 8,000 deaths annually in Spain, and recent research offers hope for future therapeutic options. The project was funded by the CRIS Contra el Cancer Foundation and the European Research Council, highlighting the importance of investing in research to improve cancer treatment.
