Russia intends to begin using the CaTeVac cancer vaccine in 2027 to treat patients with soft-tissue sarcomas, according to the office of Deputy Prime Minister Tatiana Golikova. The vaccine was developed domestically by the N.N. Petrov National Medical Research Center of Oncology in St. Petersburg.

Preclinical studies have been completed, and authorities are preparing the documents required to obtain production and clinical-use approvals. Therefore, the treatment is not yet widely available, and its use depends on regulatory approvals.

CaTeVac is based on dendritic cells, components of the immune system that help the body recognize tumor cells. The vaccine is designed to train the patient’s immune response to identify and destroy cancer cells.

At a later stage, Russian authorities are considering using the vaccine for melanoma, kidney cancer, primary tumors of the central nervous system and other malignant solid tumors, particularly in cases where standard treatments have been exhausted. These indications are presented as possible future uses and require further evaluations and approvals.

Context: Russia is preparing cancer vaccines alongside advances in immuno-oncology and targeted therapies

Before the announcements about a vaccine developed in Russia, American companies reported promising clinical results for a personalized melanoma vaccine: Moderna and Merck announced effects that reduced the risk of recurrence or death by more than 40% in patients enrolled in advanced studies, produced based on genetic analysis of the tumor and administered after surgical removal, in combination with immunotherapy.

Also during the preceding period, the FDA approved a treatment for advanced pancreatic cancer that doubles the survival rate, available under an accelerated review, confirming interest in new therapies aimed at improving disease control in difficult-to-treat stages.
