  • The president of the Fiscal Council, Daniel Dăianu, was in the spotlight when he compared the budget deficit to "a gangrene" and warned that Romania can no longer postpone an increase in tax revenues, including through tax increases, if it wants to regain financial stability.

In the same context, the interim leader of PSD, Sorin Grindeanu, asked whether PSD takes part of the blame for the fiscal imbalance, emphasized the context of the coalition government with PNL and UDMR, but also the decision to massively boost investments.

The Presidential Administration was in the spotlight after President Nicușor Dan organized a meeting with business representatives to identify viable solutions to reduce the budget deficit. The talks focused on constructive measures to avoid tax increases and increase efficiency in spending public money. In this context, the appointment of Radu Burnete, executive director of the employers' confederation Concordia, as presidential adviser for economic and social affairs came as a signal of institutionalized dialogue with the private sector.

Producer Agro Ardeal has initiated the recall of a batch of bacon with paprika after tests confirmed contamination with Listeria Monocytogenes. ANSVSA and the Penny's chain have issued public warnings, asking consumers to return the product or destroy it.

Mircea Man, vice-president of ANRE, announced that the institution is working on a new, simpler and more transparent format for energy bills after the current compensation scheme ends. The aim is to reduce errors and increase consumer confidence at a time of volatility in the energy market.

Inspectors from ANPC continued thematic controls in large retail chains in the capital, imposing fines totaling more than 120,000 lei and ordering the temporary suspension of services where labeling irregularities and misleading commercial practices were detected.

Also on the fiscal front, Kelemen Hunor rejected the idea of raising VAT or introducing progressive taxation, saying the economy is not ready for such measures.

Interim Finance Minister Tanczos Barna gave assurances that there are no risks to the payment of salaries, pensions or blocking investments already budgeted. However, he warned that reaching the deficit target requires a package of measures to be agreed quickly by the coalition, based on fiscal scenarios and impact analyses to be presented by the ministry.
