The European Commission will designate ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, and the gaming platform Roblox as 'very large online platforms', according to the Digital Services Act (DSA), after they have surpassed 45 million monthly users in the European Union.

The decision could be announced in August, according to Bloomberg. The DSA requires platforms to combat illegal content and manage risks associated with harmful content, with additional obligations for very large platforms, including publishing transparency reports and paying an annual fee to the European Commission. Non-compliance with the regulation can result in fines of up to 6% of global annual revenue.

The regulation also targets the protection of children online, and Roblox has recently implemented stricter measures for the safety of its young users. The European Commission has opened over 12 investigations into online platforms since the regulation came into force in 2022, already imposing significant fines for non-compliance with transparency obligations.
