The European Commission has announced its official support for the European citizens' initiative 'My Voice, My Choice', which calls for the use of EU funds to ensure safe and legal access to abortion services in all member states. This initiative has gathered over 1.2 million signatures, including 74,000 from Romania, placing the country fifth in the EU in mobilizing for reproductive health rights.

The Commission confirmed that the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) can be used to support states in ensuring these services, emphasizing that health policies remain a national responsibility. The Vice-President of the European Parliament, Nicu Ștefănuță, welcomed the decision, stating that it is a historic moment for women's rights.

The initiative does not impose legislative changes but calls on the European Union to financially support effective access to safe and legal abortions. It also mentions that in Romania, over 80% of public hospitals do not provide abortion services, making the legal right inaccessible for many women.
