The European Commission has decided that Meta must restore free access to WhatsApp for general-purpose digital assistants, following an antitrust investigation opened in December 2025.
This provisional measure has been imposed to prevent serious harm to competition in the digital assistant market, considering that Meta has blocked access for other AI providers to the WhatsApp for Business interface. The Commission concluded that Meta has abused its dominant position, and changes to its policy could affect market development. Meta must restore access within 5 working days, maintaining the conditions prior to the blockage.
The investigation continues, and the Commission can impose fines for non-compliance with its decisions. This action aims to protect competition and innovation in the digital assistant sector, which is essential for consumers and businesses.
