The European Parliament has approved the extension until April 2028 of the temporary framework that allows certain online communication service providers to detect materials containing sexual abuse of children. The measure does not allow the breaking of end-to-end encryption used by applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram, or Signal, but maintains the possibility of using content scanning technologies on users' devices before messages are encrypted and sent. The decision is temporary, while European institutions continue negotiations regarding the future regulation unofficially known as "Chat Control 2.0".
