The High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, emphasized the need to increase economic pressure on Russia to accelerate the end of the war in Ukraine.
In an interview with the German broadcaster ARD, Kallas highlighted the importance of sanctions against the phantom fleet of Russia, which transports oil and generates revenue for the Kremlin. She stressed that close coordination among Western allies could amplify the effect of the sanctions. Kallas mentioned that the Russian economy is in a precarious situation, which could lead Moscow to end the conflict. The phantom fleet, made up of hundreds of worn-out ships, is used by Russia to evade international sanctions.
Kallas also addressed the question of redirecting weapons intended for Ukraine to the Middle East, stating that she requested clarifications from NATO, which confirmed that deliveries to Ukraine continue as planned. This situation was also highlighted by The Washington Post, which reported that the Pentagon is analyzing the possibility of redirecting some weapons due to tensions in Iran.
