The NATO summit from July 7-8 in Ankara will take place without public criticism regarding the human rights situation in Turkey, according to statements from the involved diplomats. This approach differs from the tensions in 2021, when Western ambassadors called for the release of philanthropist Osman Kavala, with President Erdogan's reaction being extremely harsh. After Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the allies' priorities have changed, with an emphasis on security cooperation with Turkey, a strategic player in NATO. Despite this collaboration, human rights organizations are signaling an intensification of repression against the opposition, particularly the Republican People's Party (CHP). The case of Osman Kavala remains emblematic of human rights abuses, and press restrictions prior to the summit have been criticized. The summit also marks the first visit of American President Biden to Turkey, aimed at strengthening the unity of the alliance and cooperation in the defense industry. Analysts suggest that Turkey's strategic importance leads to a more cautious approach from Western states regarding democracy-related criticisms.
