The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, stated that Ukraine will not be able to join the European Union in January 2027, even if all member states would want this. Kos explained that Ukraine must adopt all legislation and the community acquis in order to become a member.
During a recent visit to Ukraine, the authorities asked her what is more important: survival or the implementation of the necessary reforms for accession. Kos acknowledged the difficulty of this dilemma, considering the context of the war with Russia.
The Commissioner proposed a gradual integration of Ukraine, starting with specific areas, such as energy, to respond to the urgency of the situation. She also emphasized that all countries wishing to join the EU must carry out reforms. Kos mentioned that the recent elections in Hungary, which brought a candidate closer to EU positions, provide an opportunity for progress in Ukraine's file, already reflected in economic aid and sanctions against Russia.
