At the 68th high-level meeting of the heads of state from Mercosur, held on Tuesday in Paraguay, the divergences among the members of the bloc were highlighted, especially regarding the implementation of the trade agreement with the European Union.
The President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, the host of the summit, opened the discussions with a critique of the internal "asymmetries" of Mercosur, emphasizing that the conditions are not equal for all members. He called for concrete results to correct the perceived imbalances in the agreement signed with the EU, which is set to be ratified. Peña stressed the importance of equity in the distribution of exports to the EU and warned that an inequitable Mercosur cannot be considered a fraternal bloc.
