The United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) has published an alarming report, announcing that the world is facing a "global water crisis." This situation results from decades of over-exploitation, pollution, and environmental destruction, which have led to the depletion of rivers, lakes, and aquifers faster than nature can replenish them.

The term "water crisis" describes a state in which water use exceeds the capacity for regeneration, severely affecting ecosystems. The report highlights significant losses of wetlands and alarming declines in groundwater, with "day zero" crises becoming increasingly frequent. Climate change exacerbates the situation, and the report's author, Kaveh Madani, emphasizes the need for a rethinking of water policies. He urges governments to acknowledge the reality of the water crisis and to act before irreversible damage occurs.
