The National Administration Apele Române has declared that Romanians can build wells and use the water from them for drinking, watering gardens, and watering animals for free, without risking taxes or criminal penalties.
This clarification comes in response to false information circulating in the public space, according to which citizens would be taxed for using water from wells. The draft law currently under public debate does not introduce taxes for water used in households and does not turn the use of water from wells into an offense. Citizens can use water from wells without a permit, as long as the flow does not exceed 0.2 liters per second. The project exclusively targets serious offenses against the environment and illegal large-scale water extractions.
Apele Române emphasizes that the use of water from wells for household purposes is not comparable to illegal water extractions. Previously, the Ministry of Environment rejected false information related to the prohibition of using rainwater, reaffirming that there are no regulations prohibiting its collection.
