A group of over 30 teachers, researchers, and writers, including Mircea Cărtărescu, has addressed an open letter to the Ministry of Education and Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, requesting the halt of the approval of the new Romanian Language and Literature curriculum for the 9th grade. They argue that the curriculum is "procedurally and scientifically flawed," ignoring previous criticisms and risking to alienate students from literature, thus increasing functional illiteracy.
The signatories argue that the validation process of the curriculum is affected by conflicts of interest, having common members in the drafting and approval committees. They also complain about the lack of transparency in the selection of committee members and believe that the revised version of the curriculum does not address fundamental issues but only makes superficial changes.
Criticisms include the retention of the diachronic organization of the contents, which could alienate students from literature, and the introduction of inappropriate authors and literary forms. The signatories demand the development of a new curriculum, based on solid scientific principles, that reflects pluralism of opinions and helps improve the quality of education in Romania, in the context of joining the OECD.
