Sorin Ionescu, proposed by the PSD for the position of minister-delegate for pre-university education, called for closer cooperation between schools and public safety institutions following the knife attack that took place on Monday, October 19, at the “Ștefan cel Mare” Middle School in Bistrița. At the same time, he believes that identifying any potential radicalization tendencies of the student goes “a little beyond the competence of the Ministry of Education.”
Following the parliamentary hearings, where Ionescu received a positive endorsement, he stated that a concrete plan to prevent violence in educational institutions must be developed quickly.
He also supported amending the legislation to strengthen the protection of teachers, warning that the mere presence of security guards does not guarantee the safety of students and teaching staff.
Asked who should have noticed any potential radicalization tendencies of the aggressor student, Ionescu said that he did not have enough information about the case and that the issue goes beyond the competence of the Ministry of Education. According to him, schools must develop clear prevention policies.
“Regardless of who should have noticed him, I repeat, it is not the responsibility of the Ministry of Education. However, I believe that schools must also be taught to prevent such cases through prevention policies, because if we do not intervene with very clear prevention policies, such a trend could spread,” Sorin Ionescu said.
On Monday, a seventh-grade student attacked a female teacher and injured a classmate. The incident was allegedly related to the religion or ethnicity of another student, who was not injured. The teacher and the injured child were taken to hospital and were in stable condition. Suspicions of radicalization and information regarding DIICOT’s involvement have not been officially confirmed.
