President Nicușor Dan announced on Wednesday the expansion of the FLEX Global and FLEX Global Abroad educational programs, jointly implemented by Romania and the United States. During the 2027–2028 school year, up to 70 Romanian students will be able to study at high schools in the US and live with American host families, while up to 20 American students will be able to study in Romania.
The significant increase in the number of scholarships awarded to Romanian high school students is the new development. Last year, the program was available to 20 students from Romania.
The announcement came after a meeting the head of state held at the beginning of the week with Lisa Choate, president of the American Councils for International Education (ACIE), and Carter Johnson, the organization’s regional director. Nicușor Dan stressed that the strategic relationship between Romania and the US is also being strengthened through cooperation in education.
On Tuesday, interim Minister of Education and Research Mihai Dimian and Lisa Choate signed the Memorandum of Understanding on awarding scholarships for the 2027–2028 school year. The programs are co-financed by the Ministry of Education and Research and the US Department of State and administered by ACIE.
After returning home, participants are encouraged to get involved in educational projects, volunteer activities and community initiatives. Applications are expected to open, and candidates will go through a selection process.
