In October, consumption decreased by 4.6% compared to the same month of the previous year, while previous declines were 4% in August and 3% in September. This trend reflects an adjustment in consumer behavior, who have felt a loss of purchasing power due to 10% inflation and net wage increases of only 4%. Codărlău mentioned that, although GDP could end the year with a small increase, the decline in consumption could lead to a contraction in the fourth quarter, which would confirm entry into technical recession. The Vice President of CFA Romania, Alexandra Smedoiu, added that there is a risk of an increase in VAT in the second half of next year, depending on the evolution of collections.
