Italian banking group UniCredit has increased its stake in Commerzbank to around 21%, despite opposition from the Berlin government. The acquisition comes shortly after UniCredit announced its intention to reach a stake of up to 29.9% in Commerzbank. A possible merger between the two banks is considered one of the most attractive combinations in European banking.
