Romania’s unemployment rate stood at 6.4% in August 2026, seasonally adjusted, remaining at the same level as in the previous month, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (NIS).
The number of unemployed people aged between 15 and 74 was estimated at 523,400. Although the figure fell slightly from July, when approximately 526,800 people without a job were recorded, it increased by 28,600 people over one year, compared with August 2025. The annual increase is approximately 6%.
By gender, the unemployment rate was higher among women, at 6.5%, compared with 6.3% among men.
Young people remain the most affected category. The unemployment rate among people aged between 15 and 24 reached 30.8% in the April–June 2026 period.
Among the adult population aged between 25 and 74, the unemployment rate was 5.2% in August: 5.1% for men and 5.3% for women. Unemployed people in this category account for 76.5% of the estimated total.
