Romania’s unemployment rate reached 6.3% in September 2026, down 0.1 percentage points from August, according to data published Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics. During the same period, the number of unemployed people aged 15 to 74 was estimated at 517,100.
Compared with the previous month, when approximately 523,400 unemployed people were recorded, their number fell by 6,300. The monthly trend is, however, offset by the comparison with September 2025, when the number of unemployed stood at 490,900. Thus, in a single year, the number of unemployed people increased by more than 26,000.
Seasonally adjusted data also indicate differences between women and men. The unemployment rate was 6.5% among women and 6.2% among men, with the rate for women 0.3 percentage points higher.
The most vulnerable group remains young people aged 15 to 24. Their unemployment rate was 30.8% in the April–June 2026 period, meaning that nearly one in three young people in this age group was unemployed.
