Ukrainian railways have signed a new contract with Alstom for the purchase of 55 electric locomotives, worth 470 million euros, mainly financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the World Bank. French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that this agreement represents concrete support for Ukraine in the context of the Russian invasion. The locomotives, of the Traxx Hauler type, are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions and will be manufactured in France, including staff training. This contract follows a memorandum from 2021, which initially provided for the delivery of 130 locomotives, but was not completed due to the conflict. The director of Ukrainian railways, Oleksandr Pertsovski, highlighted the importance of this agreement in modernizing the railway fleet, considering the average age of the current trains is 46 years.
